Primary school forced to evacuate after car ploughs into wall

A car ploughed into a primary school in Liverpool, forcing it to shut for the day.

The crash took place at Beacon Church of England Primary School on Heyworth Street, in Everton, at about 8.30am on Monday.

Photos show a dramatic hole in a brick wall, with a white vehicle on the inside of the building.

No children were in the area of the crash, Merseyside Police confirmed, but they have been evacuated from the school.

The woman who was driving the car has been assessed at the scene by paramedics.

A passenger in the car sustained a minor injury.

The fire service was called but they said no one had been trapped in the vehicle at any point.

Police have cordoned off the school (PA)

A cordon around the building has been put in place, along with some road closures.

Parents, who dropped their children off just minutes before the collision, told the Liverpool Echo how shocked they were.

Merseyside Police said: “We can confirm that emergency services are in Everton following a road traffic collision at a school this morning, Monday 22 April.

“At around 8.30am, reports were received of a car in collision with Beacon Primary School in Heyworth Street, Everton.

"The female driver of the car is being assessed at the scene. A passenger in the car sustained a minor injury.

"No other injuries were reported and no children were present in the area of the collision. The building will be assessed for any structural damage.

Pupils were sent home for the day (PA)

"The school will be closed for the rest of the day and road closures are in place. Please avoid the area."

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service said: “Crews were alerted at 08.34 and on scene at 08.39, with two fire engines and the search and rescue team attending.

"This was a road traffic collision (RTC) involving one vehicle into a school building. No persons were trapped, two occupants of the vehicle are in the care of North West Ambulance Service.

"Merseyside Police also attended and a cordon around the building was put in place. Fire Service personnel made the scene and vehicle safe, and the Search and Rescue team erected temporary shoring to the affected area.

"Utilities to the affected building have been isolated and a structural engineer requested. A full roll call at the school was completed with all persons accounted for.”
