Primark v Poundland - we compare kids' Christmas jumpers

Christmas Jumper Day arrives this week, which can be another costly affair for parents.

With families already struggling to make ends meet amid the cost of living crisis, we reported earlier how some are opting to buy them secondhand from the likes of Vinted, eBay and charity shops.

And with some mums saying they'd picked them up from as little as £1 each, who can blame them.

But new ones don't have to cost a fortune.

Primark says jumpers 'from £7', but in reality few are this price (Manchester Family / MEN)

We headed out to Poundland and Primark to see what both had on offer.

Our first stop at Poundland revealed quite a small range overall, but the children's ones are priced £7 or £8.

At Primark however, where the range is much bigger, it might say 'from £7', but in reality few are this price. In fact we could only find two at this price - both red with either a Santa face or a deer on the front.

Poundland, left, were much thicker than the similar priced ones from Primark, right (Manchester Family / MEN)

And while the £7 Poundland ones are the thicker kind - impressively so with 50% cotton 50% polyester - the similar priced ones at Primark are much thinner, with a mixture of polyester and acrylic.

Primark's thicker jumpers start from around £9 and the ones with popular brands and characters on, like The Simpsons, cost around £14.

On value for money Poundland comes up trumps, but with a limited range you might struggle to find what you need in store.

There's a wider range available in Primark (Manchester Family / MEN)

If you don't mind paying a little extra - or your child would prefer a character design, gaming theme, or even a light-up jumper - then Primark is your best bet.

But remember that Christmas Jumper Day is not far off - Thursday, December 8 - so wherever you choose to get one, there's no time to hang around.
