Last weekend, Primark found itself becoming the butt of the joke with shoppers, after it shared an April Fool's joke which monumentally backfired. This year's April Fool's Day fell on Saturday April 1, but it seems as though Primark missed that memo.
In a bid to fool shoppers, Primark shared a post saying it would be rivalling major supermarkets and selling groceries in stores alongside its fashion, beauty and homeware offerings. But while the April Fool's prank had good intentions, it went down like a lead balloon with some shoppers, after they noticed a glaring error.
Why? It was posted a day early.
Posting on its Facebook page, Primark said: "We’re expanding our product offering! From Summer 2023, love the feeling of picking up your weekly groceries at Primark."
Joy Haley said: "Assuming this post was intended for tomorrow?" Alison Cullen said: "Has this been published a bit early? Was this meant for tomorrow??"
Sarah Kellett said: "Sometimes living by the motto 'The early bird' works great...this time not so much." Jennifer Douglass wrote: "I think you might be a day early in posting."
Kitty Katt kindly pointed out: "It's not April 1st yet." Tracie Cairns King said: "Nice try Primark, nice try! You're going to have to try to April Fool me again next year - and you'll have to try harder. Much harder!"
Some people, however, didn't quite grasp it was an April Fool's joke. Jenni Hernández slammed: "This is getting ridiculous. Why not offering in stead making clothes for people who don't wear cropped tops/sweaters, or bigger sizes? What about expanding to cities like Athens, Greece? What does fruit have to do with clothes?"
Jasvinder Mehmi said: "Can you please expand your night range and bring back the nighties! Not the Disney ones the other ones the norm v neck nighties that used to be on a stand with different designs." Claire Childs said: "You need to let us shop online!! I don’t have a primark within an hour of me!! Sad times."
Charlie Tonks said: "Never mind groceries, work on your sizing!" Suzii Wood said: "So most Primark stores can’t even stock Maternity clothes in store for you to try on.. but they’re now bringing out a fruit and veg section. Excellent Primark…. Top priorities, well done."
Soon after the original post was shared, Primark updated shoppers with a second, confirming that it was, indeed, an April Fool's. Primark told its followers: "Gotcha. April fools! We’ll leave the fruit & veg to the OG supermarkets. Who got fooled?"
Responding to the post, Denise Neesy Jones said: "No one ! Lol might have been a little more convincing if it was a whole rack of fruit not clothes in between." Rachael Chapman said: "If only someone hadn’t already posted it on 31st March."
Jennifer M Swann saidL "Would be nice to be able to nip to Primark and do a grocery shop as well as clothes and homeware." Steph Hampson said: "No, everyone knew you were lying, esp since you did the prank on the wrong day."
Danyal-Cerys Green said: "I mean you did it in March so I don’t think many people believed you." Charlene Mike-Bell added: "This isn’t even funny with the current shortage."
