Primark issues update as face mask rules change in Wales

Primark has issued an update on face masks in its Welsh stores. It comes as the coronavirus rules and regulations in Wales change.

As of Monday, March 28 people no longer have to wear masks in shops or on public transport although they will still be needed in health and social care settings. The legal requirement to self-isolate has also been scrapped and instead, people are being asked to stay inside if they test positive but it is no longer the law.

Businesses are still being asked to complete risk assessments. You can read more about the Covid rules no longer in force from today — and the only two remaining, here.

The First Minister has stressed, however, that the Welsh Government will continue to strongly advise everyone to wear face coverings in crowded indoor public places, including in shops and on public transport, despite it no longer being a legal necessity.

Following the news major supermarket chains such as Asda, Morrisons and Sainsbury's responded, with many saying they will continue to ask customers to wear face coverings. You can read more on what the retailers said, here.

And now Primark has issued a response and an update for its customers. The popular high-street store has eight branches across Wales, located in Cardiff, Newport, Cwmbran, Llandudno, Wrexham, Llanelli, Swansea and Broughton.

Primark has asked shoppers to continue to wear a face-covering if they can. A Primark spokesperson told WalesOnline: "We want our customers and colleagues to continue to feel safe in our stores. Even though it is no longer a legal requirement, we hope that people will continue to think of others and wear a face covering if they can."

Coronavirus rules in Wales from March 28 - what rules are still in place?

  • Face-coverings are still legally required in health and social care settings. They are also still recommended, though not required, for adults in classrooms and school settings
  • Businesses, organisations and workplaces are still legally required to carry out a specific "coronavirus risk assessment," and then to put in place "reasonable measures" to reduce the risk of spreading the virus on their premises

What rules have been lifted?

  • Self-isolation after a positive coronavirus test is no longer legally required, though it is "strongly advised". It is also advised that anyone with symptoms self-isolates, though this is no longer legally required either.
  • Face coverings are no longer legally required in shops or on public transport, though they are "strongly advised" in crowded areas.
