Prices at Edinburgh and West Lothian petrol stations sky rocket to nearly £2

Once again fuel prices are on the rise with costs at some Edinburgh and West Lothian petrol stations sky rocketing to nearly £2.

After hearing about petrol and diesel prices spiking again we visited our local Shell petrol stations to see exactly how much by.

First we stopped at the Shell garage on Edinburgh Road just out of the city in Broxburn, West Lothian.

Here prices were an astonishing 196.9p per litre for both diesel and petrol - nearly £2 a litre.

Despite the steep prices, the fuel station was still pretty busy with delivery drivers, fire engines and work vans stopping by to fill up.

To see if there was a comparison in the prices we drove to the nearby Shell garage on Glasgow Road within the city of Edinburgh.

To our disappointment there wasn't much of a difference and costing 179.9p per litre for petrol and £188.9 for diesel.

Despite the high price were forced to fill up at this fuel stop, as the petrol light had come on en route.

We paid just over £25 for half a tank of petrol of our modest 1.3L engine, which the car claims will get us around 155 miles.

Petrol has risen in price 21 per cent since the start of the year, and diesel 24 per cent.

On June 8 the average price took the biggest daily jump it has in 17 years with a rise of more than 2p a litre.

The soaring cost of driving is becoming a national crisis, according to the RAC motoring organisation.

RAC fuel spokesperson Simon Williams said: "More radical government intervention is urgently needed, whether that’s in the form of a further reduction in fuel duty or a VAT cut.

"As it is, drivers surely won’t be able to cope unless something is done to help.

“This is fast becoming a national crisis for the country’s 32 million car drivers as well as countless businesses.”

He added: “With analysts predicting that oil will average $135 US dollars a barrel for the rest of this year, drivers need to brace themselves for average fuel prices rocketing to £2 a litre, which would mean a fill-up would rise to an unbelievable £110.“
