There are many ways to judge the rate of inflation, how much more expensive everything in the shops is getting, but one of the simplest is the price of a Freddo - Cadbury's staple frog-shaped chocolate treat that used to cost just 10p.
Back in the 90s when it was relaunched you could buy the snack for 10p in shops across the country and it stayed at that price until 2005. But by 2015 the bar had already hit an average of 25p and by 2017 it was 30p. And now one mystery shopper has found you could pay almost double that in some shops amid the cost of living crisis.
The average price of a Freddo in 2022 stands at 30p – a whopping 200% increase on the 1990s figure, reports The Echo, but some shops are selling them at much higher prices.
Home Bargains - 85p for five (17p each)
If you’re looking for the best value Freddo in town, Home Bargains is the place to go. It doesn’t sell individual Freddos but you can get a multipack of five for 85p – working out at 17p each.
B&M - £1 for five (20p each)
Up next for value for money is B&M, who are selling a five pack of Freddos for £1. This works out at 20p each – which is still, unfortunately, twice as much as prices in the 90s.
If you’re feeling Fred-venturous, B&M has also stocked up on ‘milky top’ (half white chocolate and half milk chocolate) and strawberry-flavoured Freddos. At £2.99 for a bag of 12, they work out at 25p each, so you’re paying an extra 5p for the experience.
Tesco and Sainsbury’s - 30p
Tesco Expresses and Sainsbury's Locals sell Freddos for a standard price of 30p – earning them second place in the expensive Freddo hunt. Online they sell for 26p atTesco and 25p at Sainsbury’s.
WHSmith - 49p
If you can believe it, the most expensive Freddo the ECHO found was 49p at WHSmith.
