Stephen Kenny is not hopeful of having Matt Doherty for Ireland's June internationals but is not ruling James McClean out of contention.
Ireland are still awaiting news on their four Nations League fixtures in the summer that were due to get underway against Ukraine on June 4, but those matches remain up in the air.
Doherty, who had been in a rich vein of form on the back of seven successive starts for Tottenham, suffered a knee ligament injury in last Saturday's Premier League victory over Aston Villa.
"I wouldn't be too optimistic of having Matt available in June," admitted Kenny this evening. "It's early days and we'll see how he is, he's seeing a specialist tomorrow, we'll be wiser then.
"The initial prognosis they were talking about is 10 to 12 weeks. It's a knee ligament injury, that's where we are with that.
"I have left him alone for the minute. Our medical team are dealing with the Spurs medical team, I will be speaking to him over the next couple of days."
Asked if he was fully ruling out the 30-year-old wing-back, Kenny replied: "You never know with these things, you can be surprised, but it seems pretty clear on this one.
"We'll know more tomorrow but it seems it is that kind of time frame. They sent the scans over, that seems to be the case."
McClean, meanwhile, suffered a knee injury while playing for Wigan against Bolton the weekend before last.
It was initially feared that the veteran winger could face between nine and 12 months on the sidelines but he quickly received a much better prognosis.
"James is seeing a specialist as well, he was due to see one today actually," said Kenny. "I think the question is how long James needs his knee in a brace for, that could determine how that goes.
"Initially he got really bad news, and then he got better news. James is very determined, as you know.
"If they go up automatically there is a four-week gap between the end of League One and the international break, unlike the Premier League where it just goes straight in.
"It's a situation we are unsure of, all things being equal he would be ruled out, the injury itself, but James is quite determined. The odds are against him based on the medical advice but James often defies that.
"It depends if they need his knee in a brace for a much longer period, which affects anything he can do. It depends on the specialist."
Kenny says that Ireland will tailor individual programmes based on when players finish up their club campaigns and how they are fitness-wise.
"Josh Cullen, they got into the top four in Belgium, the top four spot away, they were fifth two weeks ago and finished third and he has a Cup final next Monday.
"They finish the week before and you have the Championship final - we could have three Sheffield United players, we don't know on that.
"We will have to tailor individual programmes and maybe get players in earlier, lads who have not been playing we might have to get them into camp earlier."
