'Pretty big possibilities to have success': Ange makes defiant Spurs transfer pledge

Tottenham Hotspur remain an enticing prospect for potential signings ahead of Monday’s transfer deadline, according to manager Ange Postecoglou.

However, as the clock ticks down, Spurs have yet to secure any outfield reinforcements, despite an ongoing injury crisis that has left them severely short on options.

Postecoglou, who arrived at Spurs in the summer of 2023 after a highly successful spell in charge of Celtic, has endured a turbulent tenure in north London.

While his first few months in charge brought optimism and attacking football, injuries and inconsistent form have made for a difficult second season.

The Australian coach continues to face one of his biggest challenges yet, with nine first-team players unavailable for Sunday’s crucial English Premier League clash against Brentford.

Despite repeatedly calling for reinforcements and having to reply on kids, Tottenham have yet to add to their outfield ranks this month.

One of their latest targets, Bayern Munich’s Mathys Tel, was the subject of discussions between the two clubs on Friday afternoon, but the 19-year-old forward has reportedly turned down a move to the Emirates Stadium.

Spurs still have opportunities to end their 17-year trophy drought, with key Carabao Cup, FA Cup, and Europa League fixtures looming in the next six weeks.

However, their league form has been a growing concern, with the Postecoglou’s side dropping to 15th in the Premier League table, raising fears of an extremely disappointing domestic campaign.

With just days remaining in the transfer window, Tottenham’s recruitment team faces mounting pressure to deliver much-needed reinforcements.

Whether the club can secure quality signings before the deadline could prove pivotal in determining the course of the remainder of Postecoglou’s tenure at Spurs.

Some supporters have already lost patience calling for the removal of the ex-Celtic favourite and Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy.

“It depends what the players are looking for,” Postecoglou explained when discussing his quest for potential incomings.

“You can look at it two ways, OK the league form is not great but there’s some pretty big possibilities to have success here in the last three or four months.

“It’s still a big club, it’s still a club that can challenge for honours and it’s whether the player sees the potential that we see right now, or certainly that I see. If it’s too much of a hard sell, it’s probably not the right one for us.

“You need a bit of discipline. The one thing I don’t want to do is bring somebody in who is just going to be another body.

“I don’t think that serves any purpose knowing what we’ve got coming. That aside, there is definitely a need for us and has been a need. That’s why we’ve been looking for a player or two to help us with what’s ahead, but they have to be the right types and fit in with what we’re doing.

“I guess that’s the tricky bit. There are plenty of players available but are they going to be the right ones? That’s the question for us.”
