Pret customers react as coffee subscription to increase by 25% in March

The price of Pret A Manger's monthly coffee subscription service has gone up - and there's been a mixed reaction.

The chain launched the scheme back in September 2020 with customers being told they could get up to five coffees a day for just £20 a month.

But now due to the government's recent VAT increase, they have had to up their prices.

The extra charge comes amid a rise in inflation with many households seeing an increase in their energy and shopping bills.

According to the BBC, the chain's prices will rise from £20 to £25 per month - an increase of 25%.

But shoppers, under the increase, can still get 150 coffees in a month with the BBC stating that "if you picked up a regular £3.55 latte every day, you’d soon make your money back after seven days of buying coffees (on your eighth day)."

Reaction to the news has been mixed with some thinking it's a "ridiculous" move however others state they they are still quids in and saving money despite the £5 rise.

In response to the news one said: "I'm not surprised. I know people that have never drunk a smoothie in their life. When they realised they could get them as part of their subscription they were drinking five-a-day. Ridiculous. I feel sorry for the barristas hopefully they get a pay rise!"

Another added: "I cancelled the subscription as I thought 25 quid was a lot of money. But then I thought about it and actually I buy two coffee a day. And that is already 20 pounds a week let alone a month."

A third said: "Had been contemplating cancelling subscription due to the bitter and not nice coffee I’ve experienced over the past two weeks. Well as predicted you are raising the price by £5, not paying more for poor coffee so I’m off."

A Pret spokesperson said: "Since we launched the Pret coffee subscription in 2020, prices for ingredients such as coffee beans and milk have gone up, VAT is increasing to 20%, and we’ve invested in additional pay for Pret Team members.

"We believe the coffee subscription continues to offer great value."

Do you have a Pret subscription? If so will you be cancelling?
