Prestwick Airport strike action called off as Unite union agrees to fresh pay talks

Strike action set to begin at Prestwick Airport this Friday has been suspended.

Workers who are part of the Unite union were to walk off the job from 6am following a bitter row over pay and conditions.

But peace talks have broken out this lunchtime with new pay terms now set to be put to staff.

It follows angry workers pledging to down tools in a row over the airport's refusal to pay shift allowances and meet the Real Living Wage (£9.90) rate for new starters.

Security, firefighters, airfield operators, ground crew, ground handling, cargo, customer services and cleaners were all ready to take action.

However, airport bosses say a "productive meeting" with union leaders has found possible common ground.

In a statement, they said: "Following a productive meeting today with Unite, there is potential for an offer that can be tabled to members in a new ballot.

"To enable talks to continue, Unite have cancelled strike action until Friday, August 12 while talks are ongoing and we will meet again in the coming days."

Ayrshire Live told earlier this week how action was scheduled over four weeks on every Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

David McRonald, Unite convenor at the airport, previously pledged his members had "had enough".

He added: "We're not here to cripple the airport — we're only here to try and get a fair pay for our members.

"But at the end of the day we must show the company we're serious about what we're doing and this is only the beginning — this will continue until the management change their ways."
