Prestwick Airport staff 'devastated' after colleague dies in 'tragic accident'

Devastated airport staff have been told their colleague died in a tragic accident.

It's understood the 59-year-old man fell from a hydraulic platform at Prestwick Airport during unloading works on a cargo plane on Wednesday afternoon.

Emergency services rushed to the Ayrshire travel base around 12.10pm but sadly the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officials have today confirmed the entire airport is heartbroken following the sad news as they offered condolences and support to the man's family during what they've called an "extremely sad time."

A spokesperson for Glasgow Prestwick Airport said: “Glasgow Prestwick Airport can confirm that an employee died following an incident on site on Wednesday 11 January.

"Everyone at the airport is devastated and our thoughts are with the employee’s family and friends at this extremely sad time.

“We are working closely with the relevant authorities to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.”

An investigation into the death has been launched by the Health and Safety Executive and police.

Police confirmed yesterday that the death was not being treated as suspicious.

A source told Ayrshire Live the death was a "tragic accident."

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: "We were called around 12.10pm on Wednesday, January 11, to a report of a man falling at Prestwick Airport.

"Emergency services attended and the 59-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene.

“There are no apparent suspicious circumstances and a report will be sent to the Procurator Fiscal.”

A HSE spokesperson added: “HSE is aware of this incident and is working with Police Scotland on an investigation into it.”
