Preston manager makes prediction about Manchester United's Alvaro Fernandez after loan transfer

Preston manager Ryan Lowe has predicted Alvaro Fernandez will be a fantastic player for Manchester United.

It was announced on Tuesday that Fernandez, 19, had signed for Preston on a season-long loan. Fernandez has attracted plenty of interest over the past few weeks and Preston signed the youngster ahead of clubs in the Championship and Premier League.

Preston's assurances about playing time and their development plan for Fernandez played a key role in the deal. Fernandez did not travel with United on their pre-season tour of Thailand and Australia as he was preparing to leave the club on loan.

Fernandez plays at left-back and he trained with United's first-team on numerous occasions last season, which was recognition for his strong performances in the academy. Fernandez was a key player for United's U23s and he made 32 appearances last term.

The Spaniard will now continue his development with Preston and the Championship club's manager Ryan Lowe has lauded Fernandez's arrival after yesterday's announcement, while he also explained the role in which he will be used.

"Alvaro’s one we’ve monitored and one who was brought to our attention through our chief scout James Wallace who’s watched him numerous times," Lowe said. "Once we’d watched him a little bit more we felt he could do a job for us down that side as a left wing-back. He’ll challenge Robbie [Brady] to start.

"Robbie’s got the quality in his left foot of picking passes out, and Alvaro’s got different types of qualities in that he gets at people and he can get past them with high energy.

"He’s a fantastic asset to us and he’s going to be a fantastic football player for Manchester United. But we need Alvaro to help us in our Championship campaign and that will help him to hopefully one day make his Premier League debut for Manchester United."
