The AAP will support Yashwant Sinha, Opposition’s candidate for the Presidential election next week, the party announced on July 16.
The decision was taken at a meeting of the Political Affairs Committee [PAC], the highest decision-making body of the party, which was held under the leadership of AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal earlier in the day.
“The PAC has unanimously decided that the AAP will support Yashwant Sinha, the joint Opposition candidate, in the upcoming Presidential elections. We duly acknowledge and respect Smt Draupadi Murmu’s candidature as well, however, we have unanimously deemed it fit to support the joint candidate of the Opposition,” AAP MP Sanjay Singh, who is part of the PAC, said.
When asked about the reason behind the choice, an AAP leader told The Hindu, “What other option do we have? We can’t support the BJP candidate because if we do so, then it will be like supporting what the BJP is doing across the country.”
There have been chinks in the Opposition unity with Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray announcing his party’s support to NDA candidate Murmu.
