President Zelenskyy invites Taoiseach Leo Varadkar to visit war-torn Ukraine

President Vlodymyr Zelenskyy has invited Taoiseach Leo Varadkar to visit Ukraine in their first official phone call since the Government switchover.

The Ukrainian President tweeted about their phone call on Tuesday evening.

He said: “Had the first phone call with Prime Minister of Ireland @LeoVaradkar.

“Thanked for freezing Russian assets, discussed support for Ukraine's energy system and post-war recovery. Invited to join the implementation of the #PeaceFormula.”

During the course of the phone call, Mr Zelenskyy invited Mr Varadkar to visit Ukraine.

The Irish Mirror understands that while the invite was warmly received by the Taoiseach, it remains unclear when and if he will make the trip.

He is also said to have “thanked the Irish people for their friendship” during Russia’s war on the country.

In a statement, the Government press office said that President Zelenskyy "extended New Year’s wishes to the people of Ireland and expressed his strong appreciation for their comprehensive support for and friendship to Ukraine".

"The Taoiseach assured Mr Zelenskyy of Ireland’s ongoing solidarity, and said Ireland is resolute in backing Ukraine’s application for EU membership."

Mr Varadkar told Mr Zelenskyy that Ireland "will continue to provide financial and other assistance to Ukraine".

"Ireland was very aware of Russian attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, and was pleased to help with equipment to repair its electricity grid, such as the large transformer sent from Ireland to Ukraine this month," a spokesperson said.

Tánaiste Micheál Martin previously visited Ukraine in July where he met President Zelenskyy. The former Taoiseach entered the country on an overnight sleeper train before visiting the war torn areas in Kyiv.

President Zelenskyy also addressed TDs and Senators via video link during a joint sitting of the Dáil and Seanad in April.
