House GOP leaders credited President Donald Trump for playing a key role in rallying support for the budget blueprint during a recent vote. The voting process saw GOP lawmakers engaging in numerous phone calls and side conversations as they worked to secure backing for the plan.
House Speaker Mike Johnson highlighted Trump's assistance, stating that the President was instrumental in garnering support. House Majority Leader Steve Scalise echoed this sentiment, noting that Trump's involvement was crucial in swaying undecided members.
While not all GOP holdouts directly spoke with Trump, some did engage with him during the voting process. Rep. Warren Davidson of Ohio, who initially opposed the plan, ultimately voted in favor after receiving assurances regarding spending cuts. Similarly, Rep. Tim Burchett of Tennessee changed his stance after Trump provided assurances on addressing spending reductions.
Another notable shift came from GOP Rep. Victoria Spartz of Indiana, who had expressed willingness to support the blueprint only if specific language was modified. Following reassurances, Spartz voted in favor of the resolution.
However, Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky stood as the sole Republican to vote against adopting the resolution, which ultimately passed by a narrow margin of 217 votes to 215.
