President Donald Trump recently engaged in an initial phone conversation with Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, with a follow-up discussion scheduled for later today. This communication comes as the deadline looms for the imposition of 25% tariffs on imports from Canada.
While President Trump did not hint at any potential reprieve for the tariffs in his message, the fact that a second conversation is planned indicates that discussions are ongoing between the two leaders regarding Trump’s demands to curb illicit flows of migrants and drugs across the border.
In his communication, Trump also criticized certain practices of Canada, highlighting the restriction on U.S. banks from operating or conducting business within the country. He further emphasized the issue of the drug war, attributing hundreds of thousands of deaths in the U.S. to drugs entering through the borders of Mexico and Canada.
Trump mentioned in a post on Truth Social that he had just spoken to Justin Trudeau and would be engaging in another conversation at 3:00 P.M.
On a separate note, Trump mentioned that he did not anticipate any significant developments to arise from his discussions with Trudeau and Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum, which took place late Sunday.
