Former President Jimmy Carter's journey from the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library in Atlanta to lie in state at the U.S. Capitol has commenced. After a period of repose in Atlanta following his passing on December 29, Carter's body is now en route to Washington, D.C.
Accompanied by his family, Carter's remains are being transported to Joint Base Andrews outside of the nation's capital. A funeral procession will then proceed to the U.S. Capitol, where Carter will lie in state in the rotunda. This solemn occasion allows lawmakers and the public to pay their respects to the late president.
The opportunity to visit Carter's casket in the U.S. Capitol will be available until Thursday morning. Following this period of lying in state, a funeral service is scheduled to take place at the Washington National Cathedral. Subsequently, Carter's final journey will see him return to Georgia for internment.
