President-elect Donald Trump is calling on congressional Republicans to swiftly deliver a comprehensive bill once he assumes office later this month. With Republicans holding the majority in both the House and Senate, Trump aims to enact significant legislative changes upon his inauguration on Jan. 20.
In a recent post on Truth Social, Trump emphasized the need for a single, impactful bill that will enhance the country's prosperity. He highlighted key priorities such as securing the border, promoting American energy independence, and enhancing the Trump Tax Cuts, which he described as the largest in history. Trump also mentioned the possibility of implementing tariffs to offset any revenue losses, particularly from countries that have taken advantage of the U.S. for years.
House Speaker Mike Johnson expressed his belief that Trump prefers a consolidated approach, referring to it as 'one big, beautiful bill.' Johnson indicated that the proposed legislation would address various issues, including the debt ceiling. Lawmakers are aiming to pass the bill in the House by early April, with potential Senate approval by the end of April or by Memorial Day at the latest.
Following Trump's endorsement, Johnson retained his position as House Speaker, with most House Republicans supporting his leadership. Rep. Chip Roy of Texas cautioned that the Senate could pose challenges to budget cuts and government downsizing, emphasizing the need for public pressure to drive change. Roy also referenced the Department of Government Efficiency (#DOGE), an initiative led by Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy, advocating for reduced government spending.
