Trump expressed confidence in Cabrera's understanding of Latin American politics and predicted that he would excel in representing the nation's interests in Panama. The decision to appoint Cabrera as ambassador follows Trump's criticism of Panama for allegedly taking advantage of the Panama Canal.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump accused Chinese soldiers of illicitly operating the canal and criticized the financial burden placed on the United States for repairs. Cabrera, in response to his nomination, expressed gratitude to Trump and pledged to work diligently in his new role.
