In the recent Democratic presidential primary held in Puerto Rico, President Joe Biden emerged as the winner. Due to financial constraints and austerity measures, only a limited number of voting centers were authorized to open this year, significantly fewer than in previous elections. This decision was influenced by a federal control board overseeing the island's finances.
During the primary, Puerto Rico's Democrats also selected 36 delegates out of a total of 65 who are expected to represent the territory at the National Democratic Convention scheduled to take place in Chicago later this year.
Despite being U.S. citizens, residents of Puerto Rico are not granted the right to vote in presidential elections. This limitation has sparked discussions and initiatives within the local Democratic Party to hold a symbolic presidential election in November, allowing island residents to express their preferences for the next president.
