Mayor Esther Manheimer highlighted the challenges faced by the city, stating that only one of the four highways into Asheville is currently open, near the airport, and cannot be closed for a motorcade. By flying over the city, President Biden will be able to witness firsthand the magnitude of the devastation.
Asheville continues to grapple with significant disruptions, including widespread power outages, lack of water supply, and limited cell phone service in most areas. Residents are in urgent need of essential supplies to cope with the aftermath of the hurricane.
The mayor emphasized that the storm caused unprecedented river levels, leading to severe flooding and a surge in swift water rescues. In response to the crisis, the city is receiving emergency assistance from federal and state agencies. However, Mayor Manheimer stressed the necessity of long-term federal support for the community to rebuild and recover from the disaster.
