President Biden To Pass Democratic Torch To VP Harris

President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris finish speaking about their administration's efforts to lower prescription drug costs during an event at Prince George's Community College in Largo

President Joe Biden is set to deliver the keynote address at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, symbolically passing the party's leadership to Vice President Kamala Harris. Biden will emphasize the importance of preventing a return to the White House by Donald Trump, whom he views as a threat to democracy.

After ending his bid for reelection amid doubts about his chances against the Republican nominee, Biden will highlight Harris as the candidate to defeat Trump. He will also showcase his administration's achievements before stepping back to allow Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, to take the spotlight for the rest of the week.

Biden's endorsement of Harris following his campaign exit facilitated a smooth transition of his political operation to her, avoiding potential party discord. While Biden's role at the convention is diminished, speakers are expected to acknowledge his contributions, including leading the country through the COVID-19 pandemic and passing significant legislation on infrastructure, climate, and healthcare.

The convention's logo and signage pay tribute to Biden's legacy, with quotes from his Oval Office address urging support for Harris. The event will feature Biden's signature phrase, 'Spread the faith,' underscoring the unity within the party.

First Lady Jill Biden and other family members will be present to witness Biden's speech, marking the culmination of his five-decade career in Democratic politics. Harris is scheduled to take the prime speaking slot on Thursday evening, as Biden's influence continues to resonate throughout the convention.
