President Biden's Momentary Struggle To Name Homeland Security Secretary

U.S. President Joe Biden visits Charleston

During a recent public appearance, President Biden momentarily struggled to say the name of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, causing concern among allies present at the event. The incident occurred on June 18 at a gathering commemorating the anniversary of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.

As Biden introduced Mayorkas, who has been a key figure in addressing the border crisis since 2021, he stumbled over his words, stating, 'Thanks to all the members of the Congress and Homeland Security Secretary. I…I’m not sure I’m going to introduce you all the way.' After a brief pause, he corrected himself, addressing Mayorkas by his title.

Observers noted that Biden's soft-spoken delivery and difficulty in naming Mayorkas led to some allies exchanging concerned looks and later describing themselves as 'shaken up.' However, some individuals expressed hope that this was an isolated incident for Biden.

This incident comes amidst ongoing discussions about Biden's mental acuity, which have intensified following his performance in a recent presidential debate. Some Democrats and liberal media outlets have called for Biden to withdraw from the 2024 election, with an op-ed titled 'To Serve His Country, President Biden Should Leave the Race' being published last week.

Despite these concerns, both the White House and the Biden campaign have consistently dismissed questions regarding the President's health. When asked about potential cognitive issues, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre responded that Biden does not have Alzheimer's, dementia, or any degenerative illness causing such lapses.

Biden himself addressed his debate performance at a rally in Raleigh, North Carolina, acknowledging his age but asserting his ability to fulfill his duties. 'Folks, I know I’m not a young man. But I know how to do this job. I know right from wrong. I know how to tell the truth,' Biden stated, emphasizing resilience in the face of challenges.
