Following the passing of former President Jimmy Carter, President Biden has taken steps to honor his legacy and memory. On January 9, President Biden signed an executive order to close all executive departments and agencies of the federal government, designating it as a National Day of Mourning for the late president.
The closures, as described by Biden, are a gesture of respect towards Carter and will be in effect on the day of his funeral. Additionally, President Biden has ordered all American flags to be flown at half-staff for a period of 30 days in remembrance of the former president.
Plans are in place for Carter to lie in state in the Rotunda of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., with his funeral scheduled to take place at the Washington National Cathedral. Statements from the White House and the Carter Center have confirmed these arrangements.
In a statement, President Biden called upon the American people to gather in their respective places of worship on the day of Carter's funeral to pay homage to his memory. He also extended an invitation to people around the world who share in the grief of the nation to join in this solemn observance.
