President Biden briefly responded to questions from reporters outside the White House regarding the second assassination attempt on former President Trump. Biden expressed relief that Trump was unharmed and emphasized the need for more support for the Secret Service.
During his departure for Marine One, Biden addressed the press on the South Lawn of the White House. When asked about the incident, Biden stated, 'Thank god the president is okay.' He then highlighted the importance of providing additional assistance to the Secret Service, suggesting that Congress should address their requirements.
When questioned about the specific support needed by the Secret Service, Biden mentioned the possibility of requiring more personnel but did not elaborate further before proceeding towards Marine One.
The assassination attempt occurred while Trump was golfing at the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida. Secret Service agents intervened when they noticed a suspect attempting to breach the security perimeter by poking a rifle through a fence near the former president.
The suspect, identified as 58-year-old Ryan Routh from North Carolina, was swiftly apprehended following the incident. Law enforcement authorities were able to locate Routh with the help of a witness who provided a photo of the suspect's vehicle.
Routh is scheduled to appear in federal court in West Palm Beach on Monday morning to face anticipated federal charges related to the assassination attempt.
