President Joe Biden has approved an emergency declaration request from South Carolina to mobilize relief for Tropical Storm Debby, as confirmed by the White House. South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster has already declared a state of emergency in anticipation of the storm's impact.
Various agencies including the Department of Defense (DOD), Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and U.S. Coast Guard have been deployed and are ready to provide support in response to the storm.
Tropical Storm Debby initially made landfall in Florida on Monday morning and is expected to make another landfall in South Carolina before moving towards central North Carolina by Friday.
Officials in South Carolina are advising residents to prepare for heavy rain and potential flooding as the storm progresses through the region. Charleston is at risk of experiencing a significant amount of rainfall, with projections suggesting the city could receive a month's worth of rain in a single day, or even an entire summer's worth of rain throughout the duration of the storm. Already, Charleston has received over 2.5 inches of rain, breaking the previous rainfall record for this date.
