Presenter Huw Edwards 'bagged £25,000 in one month moonlighting from the BBC'

Newsreader Huw Edwards earned an extra £25,000 on top of his BBC salary in just one month for work outside the national broadcaster, it has been reported.

The News at Ten presenter, 60, was paid up to £429,999 by the British broadcaster and worked at a number of external events earlier this year which topped up his income.

Edwards took on four external speaking gigs in March.

To host an event for Business Matters, a popular publication aimed at entrepreneurs, the 60-year-old was paid more than £10,000, according to the BBC's external events register. For the other three gigs, the BBC's best-paid news anchor received between £5,000 and £10,000, so he may have earned more than £40,000 in total, reports the Daily Mail.

Presenter Naga Munchetty, famed for her regular work on BBC Breakfast, earned at least £15,000 from four engagements across January, February and March, according to the latest disclosures from the BBC's external events register.

Munchetty, 47, could have earned a figure as high as £31,000 because she worked at three events in the £5,000 to £10,000 bracket, as well as one which paid below £1,000. Last year, she was paid up to £259,999 by the BBC.

Fellow BBC Breakfast presenter Dan Walker, 45, earned between £20,000 and £40,000 from four outside events which also took place during the first three months of the year. Walker carried out two outside engagements in one day in February, earning up to £20,000. The presenter was paid up to £299,999 by the BBC last year.

But Huw Edwards was the only news anchor in the latest disclosures to have been paid more than £10,000 for one event. This is the highest pay bracket on the register.

Nine of Mr Edwards' colleagues received between £5,000 and £10,000 for one event where they acted as hosts, speakers, presenters or moderators for outside companies. They included Nick Robinson, Frank Gardner, Amol Rajan and Kirsty Wark.

A BBC spokesman said: "All the events listed were approved prior to being undertaken and meet the BBC's rigorous editorial guidelines."
