Preparations ramped up for 2023 Castle Douglas Soap Box Derby

Preparations are being ramped up for the return of the Castle Douglas Soap Box Derby.

The event makes its long awaited return on Sunday, having not been held since 2019 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

And thousands of fans are expected to line King Street for the second running of the race.

One of the organisers, Matt Mckerlie, said: “It’s been a real challenge, it feels like starting from scratch as it’s been that long since first one.

“The first year the ramp wasn’t big enough – it certainly is now! We’ve not shown it off much, but it is big.

“The support from the town and outwith has been great – we couldn’t have done it without them.

“It’s an event for the town, it only runs from the money people have donated and sponsored.

“Hopefully it brings people to the area and business to town.”

The action will start at 1pm on Sunday and it is hoped there will be time for each team to have two runs, with a 4x4 from Paterson ATV in Dalbeattie being used to tow the bogeys back up King Street.

The Frothy Bike Co in Dumfries is back to defend its title with 15 teams in total taking part, including entries from Dalbeattie Men’s Shed, Dumfries and Galloway Blood Bikes and Lockerbie Rotary Club.

There will be a big screen at the top of King Street allowing people to watch the action – the perfect place for disabled folk or parents with prams.

A variety of food vendors and stalls will add to the occasion, including one from the race organisers selling lucky programmes, with the owner of the winning number going home with £200.

People can also try their luck with some competitions, with youngsters asked to guess the name of the bear and older spectators guessing the celebrity.

And Solway Water Management have donated 500 bottles of water to be sold.

Matt added: “We need some sort of cash flow left over to kick-start future events.

“Insurance alone is more than £1,000 and you have to have that or there’s no event.”
