Premium Bond £1million jackpot winners this August - two Scottish winners bag £100k prizes

Two UK Premium Bonds holders are now £1million richer each as National Savings & Investment (NS&I) announces August’s high-value winners. Two jackpots of £1m were handed out, along with 10 prizes of £100,000 and 19 winners bagging £50,000.

Those holding their savings in Premium Bonds are advised to check their numbers this morning as a massive jackpot has landed in two accounts. The millionaire winners for August are located in Dorset and Buckinghamshire.

The first winner from Dorset purchased their Bonds for £20,000 just 11 months ago and has now become a millionaire. Their winning bond number is 469BR534389.

The second new millionaire is from Buckinghamshire and bought their Bonds for £5,000 in April 2009. Their winning Bond number is 155HJ070561.

Ten winners have bagged £100,000 each this month across the country. These winners are located in Edinburgh, Central Scotland, West Yorkshire, Dorset, Wandsworth, Hampshire and Isle of Wight, Wirral, Northamptonshire, and Outer London.

Winners of prizes smaller than £5,000 will be announced in the next 24 hours. The big winners are announced on the day before the first working day of each month, smaller wins are announced the next day.

Jill Waters, NS&I Retail Director, told the Mirror : “Congratulations to both our winners from Dorset and Buckinghamshire – it’s not too late for them to book the summer holiday of a lifetime with their new found windfall.

“One of this month’s winners waited 12 months to win the jackpot prize, whilst the other waited more than 13 years. I’m sure that both of them were equally thrilled with the news and undoubtedly felt the unbeatable magic of Premium Bonds.”

Do Premium Bonds notify winners?

NS&I states that they will contact winners by “text or email”, or a letter to the home address listed on your account. Those who win the £1,000,000 jackpot will be visited in person by a NS&I representative.

However, if you don’t have updated information attached to your Premium Bonds you’ll need to use your holder’s number to check if you’ve won. You can do this using the prize checker on NS&I‘s website or their prize checker app.

But don’t worry, unclaimed prizes are held until claimed by the winner. NS&I states: “You never need to worry about an unclaimed prize. We’ll hold on to it until you get in touch with us. And there’s no time limit to make your claim.”

How quickly are Premium Bond winners notified?

Premium Bond winners are drawn on the day before the first working day of the month. Big winners of prizes over £5,000 will be notified on this day. The rest of the winners will be announced 24 hours later and notified by email or text.

Millionaire winners will be given the news in person at their home address by a NS&I representative on the day before the first working day of the month. Those who’ve won less than £5,000 can expect to receive an email or text on the first working day of the month. Prizes are usually paid within seven working days.

How often does someone win a million on Premium Bonds?

There are two £1 million jackpots paid out each month by NS&I. The total prize pot, which is the interest earned on all of the Bonds held, is distributed as prizes across three value bands.

NS&I states: “We split the prizes into three value bands – higher, medium and lower – and allocate a percentage share of the monthly prize fund to each band.”

How do I check old Premium Bonds?

If you think you may have an unclaimed prize you can check your Bond record on the NS&I website or NS&I’s Premium Bonds prize checker app. You will need your holder’s number or your NS&I number.

NS&I’s website states: “You can find your holder’s number on your Bond record or by logging in to your account. Your holder's number has either 10 or 9 digits, or 8 digits followed by a letter.”

If you’re not able to find this information you can use your NS&I number. This can only be used to check if you’ve won via the NS&I’s Premium Bonds prize checker app.

This will be an 11 digit number that can be found on communications from NS&I. It starts with an 11, 21, 31 or 41.

If you don’t have access to either of these, you can get in contact with NS&I over the phone to request a new Bond record at 08085 007 007. However, if you’re not registered for their online or phone service you will need to write to them first to request a new Bond record at NS&I, Sunderland SR43 2SB. More details on what you’ll need to include in the letter can be found here .
