Fresh from inking a two-year contract extension, Broncos coach Kevin Walters has underlined his mission to break the club's 17-year premiership drought.
The 55-year-old has re-signed with Brisbane until the end of 2025 and on Friday reinforced the need for his side to acquire the ruthless edge integral to the Broncos teams with which he won five premierships as a player - starting against Canberra at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday night.
Walters took over as coach after the 2020 wooden-spoon year and the side has improved steadily ever since
"We are certainly not the finished product," he said.
"We've had a good start to the year but our priority here is to win premierships and get trophies in the building.
"We are all striving to make sure that happens and we've got the right roster here to be successful.
"The premiership window is out there in the universe. When it happens ... that is going to be determined by what happens in the next 22 weeks.
"We have the right people assembled to take this club to where we want to go."
With most of their stars signed long term, the Broncos look to be on track to win a title in the coming years, with Walters keen for the success to start sooner rather than later.
"It is about now," he said. "I know you don't win premierships in April, or after five wins, and our players certainly are aware of that as well. It is about the long haul."
Walters' extension has given the club stability after he became Brisbane's third coach in as many years following Wayne Bennett's 2018 sacking and the turbulent Anthony Seibold years (2019-2020).
"Stability is everything," he said. "I was at the great Broncos club with Wayne Bennett in charge and a very stable coaching staff and very stable playing staff.
"We have seen that (now) as well with a lot of our players re-signing and recommitting to our club, which is a great sign we are heading in the right direction."
Saturday's home clash with the Raiders is an opportunity for Walters' men to showcase an ingredient Walters says has so far been lacking.
"All the great premiership sides have that ruthlessness in them and we haven't got that just yet," he said.
"That is one of the areas we are working on. The good thing is we are all prepared to dig in."
From the moment Walters played his last game for the Broncos in 2001 all he wanted to do was return to coach the club, he said.
"The last 20 years has been all about coaching here," Walters explained.
"All of my goals have been about getting back to this club and making it great again."
