Premier League to air referee's VAR discussions for FIRST time on Monday Night Football

After relentless calls from fans, the Premier League are set to trial letting spectators listen in on conversations between the referee and VAR officials for Liverpool's clash away at Leicester on Monday night.

Premier League clubs voted unanimously to introduce video technology from the start of 2019/20 campaign in a bid to reduce the amount of controversial decisions, but things haven't exactly gone to plan in that regard. The standard of officiating in the English top-flight is still the cause for much debate as a result of regular inconsistent decisions even with the help of VAR.

As a result, discussions between VAR officials and referees will be aired to the public for the first time since its introduction when the Foxes welcome the Reds on Monday night, with insight from PGMOL chief Howard Webb.

It is widely believed that this experiment was something Webb pushed for as he aims to improve the standard of refereeing in his current role.

The former Premier League official will join Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville in the Sky Sports studio from 6:30 ahead of the showdown at the King Power - a fixture with plenty riding on it both in the race for top four and Premier League survival.

Webb will guide viewers through footage and accompanying audio of a number of high-profile calls made throughout the 2022-23 season with the aim of educating fans on why the decisions were made.

As things stand, these plans are only in place for this fixture only for the remainder of the season.

However, those at the top of both the Premier League and the PGMOL are thought to be considering making audio of referees and VAR officials available on a regular basis.

Unfortunately for supporters, fans will not be able to hear the conversations as they happen due to FIFA rules blocking audio between officials being released live, but they are allowed to be released after the full-time whistle.

Webb is very familiar with this ruling from his time in charge of the referees in the MLS. He clearly deemed it beneficial and is keen on implementing a similar structure in the Premier League.

The 51-year-old will also hope the changes will mean he no longer has to offer grovelling apologies to managers and clubs.

Most recently, he was forced to apologise to issue an apology to Brighton on behalf of PGMOL after admitting that Kaoru Mitoma should have been awarded a penalty in their dramatic 2-1 defeat at Tottenham.
