Premier League table 2022-23: Latest standings, results and fixtures as Arsenal sit top for World Cup break

Arsenal will be five points clear at the top of the Premier League over Christmas after Manchester City’s surprise loss against Brentford on Saturday.

Ivan Toney scored twice at the Etihad, including a stunning 98th-minute winner, 48 hours after being left out of England’s World Cup squad as Thomas Frank’s side recorded their first away victory of the season.

Later on Saturday, Liverpool beat Southampton to move into the top six. West Ham, meanwhile, saw their problems continue in a loss at home to Leicester.

In a busy 3pm schedule, Tottenham moved into third after a thrilling 4-3 win over Leeds and Crystal Palace failed to have a shot on target against Nottingham Forest, with Steve Cooper’s side winning 1-0.

In the evening, an out-of-sorts Chelsea saw their problems continue as they were beaten by in-form Newcastle before Arsenal battled past Wolves to extend their advantage over City.

On Sunday, Aston Villa earned back-to-back wins by beating Brighton before Manchester United downed Fulham in injury-time before the League shut up shop until Boxing Day.
