Premier League relegation battle analysed with NINE teams in the mix to go down

It proved to be another dramatic weekend of Premier League action at the foot of the table as the gap between the bottom nine teams tightened ever closer.

There were huge victories for Southampton and Wolves in the battle to stay in the division, while none of the other six sides managed to pick up a win. Nottingham Forest and Everton shared the points in a topsy-turvy encounter at the City Ground, with Crystal Palace, Leicester, West Ham, Leeds and Bournemouth all losing.

Those results mean that just six points separate 12th-place Palace and rock-bottom Bournemouth heading into the final stretch of the season. Apart from Wolves and Everton (26 each), all the sides in and around the relegation dogfight have played 25 matches, meaning there is still plenty of football to play.

So, with that in mind, here is a look at each potential relegation-contender and their next five games.

20th - Bournemouth (21 points)

Gary O'Neill must have felt robbed after his side's trip to Arsenal on Saturday. The Cherries were two-nil up at the league leaders before the home side turned the game on its head and snatched a winner in the 97th minute.

However, despite losing 3-2, Bournemouth can take many positives from the performance into their upcoming matches, although it doesn't get much easier. They face Liverpool, who beat Manchester United 7-0 at the weekend, at the Vitality Stadium in their next Premier League encounter.

Bournemouth's next five fixtures - 11/03: Liverpool (H), 18/03: Aston Villa (A), 01/04: Fulham (H), 04/04: Brighton (H), 08/08: Leicester (A)

19th - Southampton (21 points)

What a massive win that was for Southampton against fellow relegation strugglers Leicester. Ruben Selles cut a delighted figure after the game as he won his first home game in charge since taking over from Nathan Jones.

Carlos Alcaraz's first-half strike was the difference at St Mary's as Saints moved off the bottom of the league. It could be a huge three points in the context of their season, with Man Utd up next on Sunday.

Southampton's next five fixtures - 12/03: Man Utd (A), 15/03: Brentford (H), 18/03: Tottenham (H), 02/04: West Ham (A), 09/04: Man City (H)

18th - Everton (22 points)

Everton must have been kicking themselves after their trip to Forest on Saturday, as they let two leads slip to pick up just a point from the game. Demarai Gray and Abdoulaye Doucoure scored for the Toffees either side of Brennan Johnson's equaliser and it looked as though they would leave Nottingham with three points.

However, Sean Dyche's men were pegged back at the end as Johnson struck again to leave Everton inside the relegation zone. It is also now three without a win for the Toffees after losing against Arsenal and Aston Villa before the trip to the City Ground. They face Brentford in their next league match.

Everton's next five fixtures - 11/03: Brentford (H), 18/03: Chelsea (A), 03/04: Tottenham (H), 08/04: Man Utd (A), 15/04: Fulham (H)

17th - Leeds (22 points)

After beating Southampton in a relegation six-pointer, it felt as though Leeds had turned a corner under Javi Gracia. However, the Whites were brought straight back down to earth with a 1-0 defeat at Chelsea.

Leeds had a massive opportunity to record a rare win at Stamford Bridge given Chelsea's poor recent form, but they just didn't turn up and were disappointing on the day. Wesley Fofana's header earned the Blues all three points as the Whites missed the chance to move further clear of danger.

Leeds' next five fixtures - 11/03: Brighton (H), 18/03: Wolves (A), 01/04: Arsenal (A), 04/04: Forest (H), 08/04: Palace (H)

16th - West Ham (23 points)

Like Leeds, West Ham earned a mammoth win over a relegation rival last weekend but squandered the chance to build on it as they were hammered at Brighton. David Moyes' men were beaten 4-0 on the south coast and it even prompted chants of 'sacked in the morning' from the home and away supporters.

The Hammers face Aston Villa at home on Sunday in what could be described as a must-win game as they don't play again in the league until after the international break. Moyes' side also face two Europa Conference League matches to contend with, putting their survival hopes right in the balance.

West Ham's next five fixtures - 12/03: Aston Villa (H), 02/04: Southampton (H), 05/04: Newcastle (H), 08/04: Fulham (A), 16/04: Arsenal (H)

15th - Leicester (24 points)

Brendan Rodgers' Leicester will be looking over their shoulders this week after they were beaten at Southampton. The Foxes played relatively well, but had no shots on target for the second successive league game, once again demonstrating their struggles at the top end of the pitch.

Although the Foxes have struggled since the World Cup, they have a kinder set of fixtures upon them, and face just one of the division's top eight in their next nine matches. This will give Rodgers the chance to turn things around at the King Power Stadium, as it is getting a little toxic between the club and the fanbase right now.

Leicester's next five fixtures - 11/03: Chelsea (H), 18/03: Brentford (A), 01/04: Crystal Palace (A), 04/04: Aston Villa (H), 08/04: Bournemouth (H)

14th - Nottingham Forest (26 points)

Despite not picking up all three points against Everton, it felt like the draw was the better result for Forest rather than their opponents. Steve Cooper's side remained four clear of danger as they took another step closer to sealing survival in their first Premier League season for 23 years.

However, Cooper will be concerned that it is no win in four matches for the Reds - a run that included a 4-0 hammering at West Ham and a limp defeat against Fulham. Forest face Spurs on Saturday in their next game.

Forest's next five fixtures - 11/03: Tottenham (A), 17/03: Newcastle (H), 01/04: Wolves (H), 04/04: Leeds (A), 08/04: Aston Villa (A)

13th - Wolves (27 points)

If you had asked Wolves fans whether they would have taken four points from their last four matches, I'm sure most would have said yes. However, not many could have predicted them to lose against Bournemouth but beat top-four chasing Tottenham at Molineux.

A 1-1 draw at Fulham and a 2-0 defeat at Liverpool was their other two results during that four-game spell as Julen Lopetegui has dragged Wolves away from the mire. They are five points ahead of third-bottom Everton now.

12th - Crystal Palace (27 points)

The final team that could be dragged into relegation trouble is Crystal Palace, with Patrick Viera's side simply awful since the World Cup, winning once in that time. Yes, they have picked up some important points against Liverpool, Brighton, Newcastle and Brentford in recent weeks, but it is nowhere near good enough.

Palace remain outsiders to get dragged into danger, however, as after their next three matches, they face the easiest run-in in the Premier League with just one of the current top six to face. Manchester City is up next for Viera's men on Saturday.

Palace's next five fixtures - 11/03: Man City (H), 15/03: Brighton (A), 19/03: Arsenal (A), 01/04: Leicester (H), 08/04: Leeds (A)
