Premier League red card rules explained as Joao Felix sent off on Chelsea debut vs Fulham

Joao Felix's Chelsea debut did not go to plan on Thursday evening as the forward was sent off in the second half of the 2-1 defeat to Fulham.

The 23-year-old was handed a start by Graham Potter for the trip to Craven Cottage despite only securing his temporary move from Atletico Madrid on Wednesday. Felix showed numerous touches of class throughout the first half and managed to take six shots at Bernd Leno.

However, shortly after Denis Zakaria was forced off with a knock, Felix's debut was ended earlier than expected when referee David Coote showed the forward a straight red for a dangerous tackle on Kenny Tete. Fulham went on to win the game with Carlos Vinicius heading his first Fulham goal in the 73rd minute.

Only one game into his short Chelsea career, Felix will now miss the next three Premier League games, according to the Premier League rules. Felix's challenge is deemed as a dangerous tackle meaning he will be faced with a three-match ban.

The rules state that a second yellow card results in a one match ban, the same as a so-called professional foul. A player will normally face a two-match ban for dissent and a three-match ban for violent conduct. These, of course, are used for guidance and each incident will be reviewed on its own merit.

Felix is now set to miss the next three league games, meaning he'll be unavailable for the meetings against Crystal Palace, Liverpool and Fulham.
