After 37 games and countless ups and downs throughout the season, the Premier League title race comes down to the final day between Manchester City and Liverpool.
Just one point separates the two sides heading into their respective final fixtures. City take on Aston Villa at the Etihad, while Liverpool face Wolves at Anfield knowing a win may not be enough for them to secure their third trophy of the campaign.
The equation is much simpler for City. Pep Guardiola’s side know if they win against Villa, they will be crowned champions once again.
There are still plenty of outcomes possible on the final day of the season, including a potential – if improbable – play-off for the title. With every team playing at the same time on the final day, there will be plenty of supporters keeping an eye on both the Etihad and Anfield to see how the title race pans out.
Heading into the final day, these are the outcomes that still remain possible:
- If City win, they will be champions.
- If City draw or lose and Liverpool win, Liverpool will be champions.
- If City draw and Liverpool draw or lose, City will be champions.
- If City lose and Liverpool draw, City will be champions on goal difference as long as they don't lose by six or more goals.
- If City lose by six goals and Liverpool draw 5-5 with Wolves (or 6-6 if City score, etc), there would be a play-off to decide the title as both teams would be tied on points, goal difference, goals scored and head-to-head record.
City fans will be hoping they can keep things simple with the top outcome, and clinch their eighth top flight title, and their fifth since 2012. For Liverpool, they’ll be relying on former captain Steven Gerrard to do them a favour as he takes charge of Villa, with a few former Reds in his squad to boot.
