Premier League make referee demand after Arsenal and Crystal Palace VAR controversy

The Premier League is ordering the PGMOL to review a number of last weekend’s high-profile VAR mistakes after being left “disappointed.”

The PGMOL operates refereeing and VAR across the Premier League. This weekend saw PGMOL apologise and attribute “human error” to two VAR mistakes.

The first saw Brentford’s goal in the 1-1 draw at Arsenal wrongly allowed to stand when VAR Lee Mason forgot to draw a line to determine whether Christian Norgaard had been offside when crossing for Ivan Toney. Mason had instead spent three minutes checking whether a different player was offside.

At roughly the same time, Brighton’s Pervis Estupinan was denied a legitimate goal in their 1-1 draw against Crystal Palace after VAR John Brooks adjudged the Ecuadorian to be offside because he had mistakenly drawn the line from the wrong Palace defender.

Mason and Brooks have been stood down from VAR duties next weekend due to the errors.

In a statement on Wednesday morning, the Premier League’s official communications department said: “The Premier League sets high standards and is disappointed that PGMOL fell below those expectations last weekend.

“As a result, the Premier League requested that PGMOL review and explain a number of incidents from the recent match round.

“Following discussions with PGMOL, and yesterday’s Select Group One review meeting, we support PGMOL’s views on addressing these issues to improve performances going forward”.
