Premier League goalpost protests explained as Everton vs Newcastle is second match interrupted in 24 hours

The Premier League match between Everton and West Ham was halted for 10 minutes on Thursday night when a protestor invaded the pitch and zip tied himself to the goalpost.

It's the second such occurrence in 24 hours after another pitch invader briefly halted Arsenal's match against Liverpool at the Emirates.

On the occasion the encroaching spectator was swiftly removed but the action at Goodison Park took a long while to resume after the protestor halted the game.

Pictures showed the fan attaching themselves to the goals by their neck along with the anti-fossil fuels rhetoric behind his actions with a message on his t-shirt reading: "Just Stop Oil".

Stewards were eventually able to remove him using a set of bolt cutters but not before a long pause in the action in what was a huge game in the relegation scrap at the bottom of the Premier League.

The Toffees went into the game level on points with third-bottom Watford.
