Premier League cult hero rejected £40k a week to join Celtic

A former Premier League striker has claimed that he knocked back a switch to Celtic, despite being offered a whopping £40,000 a week.

Troy Deeney made the claim while appearing on the Under the Cosh podcast.

The 36-year-old insists the Scottish Premiership champions were one of several clubs to make an offer to sign him a couple of seasons ago under Ange Postecoglou.

Giorgos Giakoumakis arrived instead, but former Watford captain Deeney could've ended up playing in green and white hoops in Glasgow.

He explained: "I had two offers to go abroad, three offers to go abroad that were quite lucrative.

"I had an offer to go Middlesbrough with Neil Warnock and then Celtic came in for me as well.

"I was like 'f*****g hell that's mint, but it's f*****g miles away.

"Those teams that I've just mentioned offered me nearly £40,000 a week to go there.

"I ended up signing for Birmingham for £12,000-a week. But I was at home."
