Premier League confirm two reasons why Phil Foden's goal for Man City v Liverpool was disallowed

Premier League officials have confirmed that Phil Foden's goal for Manchester City in their 1-0 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield was disallowed due to two problems in the build up to it.

After Allison raced out of his goal to stop Erling Haaland from latching on to Kevin De Bruyne's through pass, Foden slammed the ball home to spark jubilant celebrations from the away end. Referee Anthony Taylor, however, was advised by VAR to take a second look via the pitch-side monitor, subsequently chalking off what City believed to be the opener due to a foul by Haaland on Fabinho earlier in the move.

Pep Guardiola was clearly incensed on the sidelines at seeing his side denied the chance to go in front. But it can now be revealed that there was another problem with the goal.

That was made clear by Match of the Day 2 presenter Mark Chapman during Sunday night's show. He said: "We were told as well that if it hadn't been disallowed for the shirt pull, it would have then been disallowed for Haaland's challenge on Alisson."

Haaland, who had earlier pulled Fabinho's shirt, tried to latch on to De Bruyne's through ball but was beaten to it by Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson, who appeared to get two hands to the ball.

Jurgen Klopp's side then took the lead through Mohamed Salah and defended valiantly to become the first team to defeat City in the Premier League this season. It is a result that moves Liverpool up to eighth, six points behind the top four, going into Wednesday's home clash with West Ham United.
