Premier League confirm major VAR decision that will affect Everton and Liverpool

The Premier League will not adopt the automated offside system used in the Champions League and World Cup for next season.

Clubs in the top-flight have decided against introducing the system next term, which uses limb-tracking technology and artificial intelligence when a player is offside. The system uses limb-tracking cameras to pinpoint the exact position of every player on the pitch, plus a chip in the ball to determine if it was played by a defender or attacker.

FIFA’s system was a big success, as was UEFA's use of SAOT, with supporters praising how the technology was often correct. However, the option to bring semi-automated offside technology into the Premier League next season is not on the agenda for the Annual Meeting of all 20 clubs that is set to take place in Hampshire next week.

There will, however, be four more cameras at the grounds to help VARs in a bid to avoid the errors that occurred during this season. In a bid to boost transparency, several clips of incidents that needed VAR were shown during a special Monday Night Football this season, along with the audio between the referees.

There have been calls for the discussions between officials to be played live on air, however, PGMOL chief Howard Webb has already confirmed that FIFA does not allow the audio to be played live.

We have not seen any of the European leagues where the VAR audio is played out, he told talkSPORT. "We are not allowed to do it live at the moment, in-game; the international board at FIFA doesn't allow that. Maybe that will change.

"I am part of a working group looking to see if we can get the opportunity to play audio out live. But at the moment, we can't.

"So we are doing the next best thing, playing it out afterwards. We think it is the right direction."
