Premier League clubs 'to propose scrapping FA Cup replays and changing League Cup'

Premier League clubs are to consider proposals to scrap FA Cup replays and make changes to the League Cup as part of a 'new deal' for football, according to a report.

A Premier League shareholders' meeting tomorrow (September 21) will set out the proposed new deal as well as plans to reform parachute payments for relegated clubs, according to The Times.

The report says that the proposals would see replays of the third and fourth round FA Cup games be scrapped from the 2024-05 season, although this would need to be agreed with the FA. The plans would also include clubs involved in European competitions not having to compete in the League Cup, or alternatively they could field teams of under-21 players.

It has been suggested that the EFL are yet to be approached but would be happy to discuss the plans. Among other proposals, parachute payments for clubs relegated from the Premier League would be reduced from the current level of £44million in order to reduce the gap between current Championship sides and those dropping out of the Premier League.

The new deal would see up to £250 million given to EFL clubs with the money distributed according to league position, similar to how the Premier League allocation works. Clubs would also see a limit put on their spending on player wages, transfers and agents fees being capped by a fixed percentage of the revenue they make.
