Broadcasters are reportedly in a stand-off with Premier League clubs after requesting to provide weekly highlights packages from training sessions ahead of next season.
The Daily Mail are reporting Premier League Productions (PLP) have asked to produce and broadcast highlights packages from club’s training sessions for the 2022/23 seasons and beyond, a request that has reportedly been met with resistance.
The request would involve teams sending a five minute training package to broadcasters so that they could be shown on Sky and BT in the build-up to Premier League matches. It has been reported that clubs are set to vote on the proposal, although it is expected to face plenty of opposition.
Part of the proposal is due to clubs who have posted behind-the-scenes footage from training sessions, including wonder goals and funny clips, with TV companies, whose financial injection make up large portions of team’s revenues.
The report says that at present, clubs hand 15 minute packages to broadcasters every month, but TV companies are reportedly wanting more than that and have requested five minutes of footage every week.
“There's a bit of jealousy,” a source told the Daily Mail. “The view from the broadcaster is that they spend millions upon millions but end up missing out on some of the best stuff. However, the clubs feel that they only get to film behind-the-scenes content because they have the trust of the players and the staff.”

The report claims that most of the resistance against the proposal is from clubs within the ‘big six’ who have bigger budgets and more facilities to produce training ground videos, with it being clubs lower down the table that are more open to the increased video output from training session.
Should it get approved, PLP are believed to be sending camera operators to training grounds in order to record the footage, with a vote said to be taking place in Harrogate next month.
The 2022/23 Premier League season starts on August 6, although due to the 2022 World Cup taking place in Qatar later this year, there is a six-week break in the upcoming edition with the season stopping at the end of the weekend commencing November 12/13.
With the final of the World Cup taking place on December 18, the Premier League will restart on December 26, carrying on until the season ends on May 28, 2023.
Fans do not have to wait much longer to know how next season’s fixture list will look. On Thursday, June 16 at 9am, the fixture list for the duration of the 2022/23 season will be announced.
Manchester City are strong favourites to lift the Premier League title next season, having won four of the last five top-flight campaigns.
