Premier League clubs eye Barcelona's teenage defender Pau Cubarsí

Pau Cubarsí

Barcelona's 17-year-old defender Pau Cubarsí has become the subject of interest from several Premier League clubs, with his release clause set at around €10 million ($10.7m), according to sources. Despite only signing his first professional contract with Barça last year, Cubarsí's impressive performances at the first-team level have expedited the need to secure him to a new long-term agreement.

Initially, negotiations were underway to improve the young center-back's contract, but his recent displays have altered the discussions. Sources close to the coaching staff have praised Cubarsí's maturity and bravery since making his debut as a 16-year-old in the Copa del Rey against Unionistas de Salamanca in January.

Under the guidance of coach Xavi Hernández, Cubarsí has already made six appearances, including starts in LaLiga victories against Real Betis, Osasuna, and Alavés. Xavi himself has been amazed by Cubarsí's playing style, commenting, 'He is already playing like a player who is far older than his years. He is aggressive, he does not lose possession, and he's so good at bringing the ball out from the back.'

Cubarsí's exceptional qualities have created an urgency to renew his contract, as several major English clubs are circling, drawn by the affordable €10 million release clause. The young defender joined Barcelona in 2018 at the age of 11, having spent four years at Girona. Since then, he has progressed through Barcelona's renowned La Masia academy, and earlier this season, he made his Barça Atlétic debut before training regularly with the first team.

Xavi handed Cubarsí his first-team debut on January 19th, and the teenager has left a strong impression since then, showcasing his skills alongside Uruguay international Ronald Araújo in defense. Xavi expressed his admiration for Cubarsí, stating, 'He's very well prepared. He doesn't seem 16 when you speak with him. He is a focused and responsible kid. I don't think he lost a single ball, either. He's going to mark an era, the same as Lamine [Yamal]. We are continuing to build a team with young footballers. These are players who we must build the club's future with.'

Cubarsí is not the only young talent to break through under Xavi's guidance. Players like Lamine Yamal (16), Hector Fort (17), and Marc Guiu (18) have also made noteworthy contributions this season. Fort, a versatile defender who can play across the back four, is reportedly close to signing with Jorge Mendes' agency, according to sources.

As Barcelona strives to maintain a strong foundation for the future, the emergence of promising talents like Pau Cubarsí becomes increasingly crucial. The club recognizes the significance of securing his services, especially with interest from English clubs, and aims to reach a new contract agreement that reflects his growing importance on the field.
