Premier League 2023/24 start and end dates confirmed as mid-season break returns

The 2023/24 Premier League season will commence on Saturday 12 August 2023, two-and-a-half months after the previous campaign draws to a close.

The final round of fixtures this term is scheduled for Sunday 28 May 2023, when all 20 teams will be in action at the same time, as is the division's custom. The FA Cup final and Champions League final are scheduled for Saturdays 3 and 10 June respectively, with the Europa League final on Wednesday 31 May and Europa Conference League final seven days later.

This means any Premier League side - or sides - which reaches the Champions League final will have just over two months to prepare for the new season, while there is an international break in mid-to-late June to accommodate Euro 2024 qualifying.

The final round of fixtures next season will be played on Sunday 19 May 2024. Schedulers have breathed a sigh of relief as there is no Winter World cup to account for and no coronavirus postponements expected. Instead, there will be a mid-season break between 13 and 20 January 2024.

In a statement confirming the dates, Premier League chiefs have reaffirmed that no two rounds of fixtures across the typically-hectic Christmas and New Year period will take place within 48 hours of each other. The division has made the decision "in keeping with commitments made to clubs this season".

The 2023/24 season will be made up of 34 rounds of fixtures on weekends, three midweek rounds and a bank holiday round. The precise amount of time between the end of this campaign and the start of the next is 76 clear days. The Premier League has also stressed that players will have time to "rest between the end of the season and the international fixtures in June".

Euro 2024 kicks off in Munich on Friday 14 June - with the final exactly one month later - and countless stars from the Premier League will be involved in the tournament.

This season has seen numerous top-flight managers rail against a fixture schedule they view as showing a lack of regard towards the wellbeing of their players. Speaking in September, when his side were about to play three times in seven days, in Europe or domestically, Tottenham boss Antonio Conte said: "Honestly, to see this schedule about Tottenham is incredible, it's crazy because we played three games in a week against Nottingham Forest, West Ham and Fulham.

"Now, we are playing after four days, but we are starting to play again three important games against Marseille in the Champions League, City away and Sporting Lisbon away. I think maybe this is the first time in my career to see a schedule like this."
