'Prehistoric human footprints' found on Merseyside beach

"Prehistoric human footprints" are thought to have been found on a Merseyside beach.

Sefton Council has shared photos of footprints believed to be from thousands of years ago. The footprints, that are preserved in the sediment beds at Formby, were visible this morning, with the University of Liverpool also spotting footprints two years ago that were also preserved.

The footprints can be found in a small sediment bed south of the National Trust Victoria Road car park, just 100m away from the old Tobacco Dump site. The tide is expected to take the footprints, but more could appear over the coming days.

Green Sefton posted on Facebook: "Seven thousand years of sand between our toes - prehistoric human footprints preserved in the sediment beds at Formby this morning. Always get goosebumps when we see a trail of these, a window into the past.

"What were these people doing? What were they thinking? What lives did they lead? These prints were in a small sediment bed south of the National Trust Victoria Road car park, about 100m off the old Tobacco Dump site.

"The tide will probably take them, but more may appear over the next few days."

When asked how they were thousands of years old and not recently imprinted, Green Sefton replied: "Great question. It’s about imprint depth, if you stand on the beds yourself you will barely leave a mark - these prints formed when the sediment was much softer thousands of years ago."
