The New England Patriots have yet to officially announce their captain group for the 2022 season, which is voted on by the team right before the opening week. With real football less than a week away, we’re going to take a look at who the team could ultimately elect.
In years past, New England named eight captains in 2020, and only four in 2021.
There is a league rule that mentions six captains can be named and wear the “C” patch, but that is strictly for pregame coin toss and communication with officials.
Teams can and usually will name more than six, but in New England, they let the players make the decision. And I wouldn’t hold out on any of the elected captains to wear the patch.
Bill Belichick has alluded in multiple interviews to not really having a desire to wear the patch on the game jerseys.
Although you won’t see the patch in games, we know they will have captains representing the organization ahead of their season-opening showdown with the Miami Dolphins on September 11. So let’s take a look at who those captains could be for 2022.
