It's the end of an era for popular Newcastle night spot Powerhouse, as it has been announced that the city centre club's famous flashing dancefloor will soon be no more.
As soon as the club, which used to be where Digital is now in Times Square, made the switch to its massive Westmorland Road premises, the dancefloor has been part of the furniture. Clubbers have partied there until 6am on many a Saturday night, many heading downstairs to the former Gossip bar straight after to keep the party going at 'breakfast club'; they've stood on the dancefloor as acts like Alphabeat, Neon Jungle, Booty Luv and loads of X Factor contestants have performed and they've even sat on picnic benches on it, as Powerhouse reopened as Covid secure venue in late summer 2020.
But on Friday, bosses at the club confirmed that the dancefloor will soon bite the dust. Posting a photo of it in all its multi-coloured glory on Powerhouse's Facebook page, they wrote: "It’s time to say goodbye, the flashy dance is being retired. We have just upgraded to a new state of the art lighting rig, plus the club has gone through a big refurbishment. Come down open as normal 4am tonight 5am Saturdays. Check out our Facebook book events for lots of discounts. Big things happening."

The reaction to the post about the dancefloor was massive, with regulars mourning its loss before it's even happened. One replied: "And just like the revolving dancefloor of the Tux, another North East icon is ripped away," with a second posting: "am sobbing I’ve never felt so heartbroken in my life."
A third echoed what everyone was thinking, writing: " it’s the end of an era!" and, clearly devastated another Powerhouse customer wrote: " it’ll never be the same," along with a crying emoji.
