Power outages and clean-up continue after winter storm lashes the Maritimes

FREDERICTON — The clean-up continues after a nasty winter storm lashed the Maritimes between Thursday night and mid-day Saturday.

While up to 50 centimetres of snow fell on much of New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island, freezing rain was the story in Nova Scotia.

More than 50,000 Nova Scotia Power customers were still without electricity by mid-afternoon Saturday as crews dealt with trees and power lines that were weighed down with ice.

The utility warned residents to stay safe and treat all downed lines as if they were electrified.

Strong winds were expected to complicate efforts to get power restored.

Municipal warming centres opened in many communities across the province to help residents get out of the cold.
