Poundland shuts down its website and unveils major change for online shoppers

Poundland is shutting down its home delivery website just under one year after its launch after buying rival Poundshop.com.

The budget chain is closing its shop.poundland.co.uk website on May 27, with thousands of its products moving to Poundshop.com instead.

Poundland launched its first online shop in June 2021 as part of a home delivery trial.

The service was first available 18,000 staff and a select number of invited customers before branching out to postcodes in the Midlands and the north of England.

Hundreds more postcodes were added to the website as part of its expansion over the following months.

The value retailer had converted its former store in Cannock, Staffordshire into a fulfilment centre so it could deliver to more shoppers.

At the time of its home delivery launch, Poundland said over 2,500 products would be available to order online at the same as in its 850 stores.

Products you could buy include food and drink, entertainment, DIY, and health and beauty items.

Poundland purchased budget rival Poundshop.com in March this year, taking over its website, fulfilment centre in Wednesbury in the West Midlands, staff and customer database in the process.

Poundshop.com is available nationwide with standard delivery available on orders more than £10.

Delivery costs £5.95 on orders between £10 and £29.99, or £3.95 on orders worth £30 to £39.99, or just £1 on orders of more than £40.

Next-day delivery is also available, ranging from £6.95 to £2 depending on your order size.

In comparison, delivery through shop.poundland.co.uk costs a flat £4 fee and there is no minimum spend for shoppers.

Poundland is recruiting 35 members of staff to support the Poundshop team.

Poundshop.com was founded in 2014 and has almost 400,000 customers across the UK.

It employs around 65 workers at its distribution centre in Wednesbury, West Midlands. All jobs will remain protected under the new ownership.

In an announcement titled "things are changing", Poundland told online customers: “A couple of months ago we did a little bit of shopping ourselves and bought online discount retailer Poundshop.com.

“Since then, we’ve been really busy loading up the Poundshop.com website with everything you know and love about shopping at Poundland.

“So, whether it’s our iconic Twin Peaks chocolate bar, our gorgeous #6 Beauty or some of our best-selling Pep&Co homewares, with a little help from us, our friends at Poundshop.com have made their ranges bigger and better than before.

“Because Poundshop.com is now part of the Poundland family, we’ll be sending our own pilot Poundland online shop into retirement later this month.

“You'll have until midnight on May 27 to shop at shop.poundland.co.uk... Thanks for shopping at Poundland online.“
