Poundland set to open biggest Scottish shop as budget chain announces new plans

Poundland has announced major expansion plans for this year that will see it open its biggest ever store in Scotland.

The new Scottish store will reportedly be an 18,380 square feet based in Glasgow's southside on Crown Street with an opening set for March.

It comes as the retailer has announced major expansion plans that will see it open 50 new stores - equalling half a million square feet of retail space - and create around 800 new jobs.

Poundland's expansion plans are set to take place between January to September and it will also include the relocation of some smaller stores to newer locations.

The Mirror reports that there are eight confirmed store openings planned for January to March, while another six are in the final stages of lease negotiations.

Among those relocating will be Newport, Llantrisant and Rotheram, all which will be moved to new locations in the coming months.

There are also plans to open full size stores in Aldershot and Castle Bromwich and a new Poundland Local convenience store for East Dulwich.

Poundland is yet to confirm store locations and opening dates for the further 26 stores planned for April to June. A further scheduled 13 stores for the second half of the year are also yet to be confirmed.

The planned relocations for this year will see the budget retail chain upgrade its smaller stores as leases begin to expire.

Poundland managing director Barry Williams said: "We know how customers appreciate the effort we've made in the last few years to transform our offer, offering them more of what they want to buy, week-in, week-out.

"That transformation means we have to step up our search for the best locations to bring the best of Poundland to customers across the UK and that's precisely what we'll do in 2023.

"We will continue to work hard to find the right locations that suit the range of Poundland formats we now offer - from small neighbourhood convenience stores to our large destination stores."

The latest expansion plans come after the retail chain opened up its biggest ever store in Nottingham early last year. The 15,000 square foot mega-store is double the size of a regular Poundland store and offers shoppers everything from clothing to groceries.
